Modernism & Design

The 5 key words to follow to give a mid-century look to your home

The 1950s and 1960s were years of rebirth, vibrancy, and innovation in every aspect.

More than half a century later, we are still in love with that period; the great success of mid-century furniture proves it.
In this brief post, here are some useful tips for decorating a space with an elegant, retro atmosphere in perfect “midmod” style.

1. Simplicity & Minimalism

After the war, designers wanted to break away from the past. “Too many people live in houses surrounded by the anachronism of their furniture,” says designer Egidio Bonfanti; indeed, in Italian homes, the antique, the fake antique, and an undefined pastiche dominated. The simplicity of Scandinavian masters became the model to aspire to. A process of subtraction was implemented, eliminating unnecessary embellishments and decorations in favor of simpler lines and structural lightness.
The linear and elegant design with a Nordic taste began to become very popular. Order, rigor, cleanliness, and simplicity were the key words.

2. Color

It is essential to seek simplicity in the lines but dare with color!
The tones are bright and exuberant, and prints (especially geometric ones) become very popular. So, go ahead with colorful and fun wallpapers to brighten and lighten up the spaces.

3. Modularity

One of the most important innovations introduced during these years is modularity. Furniture pieces are created to adapt to any environment thanks to their “elemental” composition. An example? The timeless Swedish-style bookshelves that can be composed; among the most beautiful is the one produced by Amma, which can undoubtedly furnish a room on its own.

4. Naturalness

“The biological characteristics of wood, its low thermal conductivity, the pleasantness of its physical contact, and its adaptability to various treatments are the reason for its strong position in the interior furniture sector.” Thus spoke architect and designer Alvar Aalto about wood and its use. In the 1950s and 1960s, many different materials were experimented with in the world of furniture, but wood remained an insurmountable cornerstone. Naturalness and craftsmanship were highly valued, and moreover, wood is the construction material that, according to the Finnish master, best satisfies the emotional needs of man. So, let’s never leave it out of our homes!

5. Accessories Accessories Accessories

In home decor, never forget the importance of accessories, objects with personality that define the style of a space.
A tip? A wall decorated with round 1960s mirrors, or why not, a beautiful serving trolley, like those you rarely see anymore, for a real dive into the past.
