Agli inizi degli anni Sessanta, la famosa "apertura a sinistra", giudicata dalle gerarchie ecclesiastiche contraria sia alla disciplina sia alla dottrina cattolica, sta invece giungendo a compimento. In tale contesto viene organizzato nel 1962 un convegno di studi sui rapporti tra stato e Chiesa il cui sostanziale obiettivo è comporre le posizioni. Da Dossetti ci si attende che dia un contributo al rilancio della presenza dei cattolici in politica, senza che ciò metta in discussione il magistero ecclesiastico. Ma l'ex costituente, ormai divenuto monaco e sacerdote, spiazza tutti con un discorso radicale in cui afferma che il compito primario del cristiano non è la costruzione della sfera politica, né la difesa in quell'ambito di verità cattoliche generali, ma è la ricerca della via della testimonianza evangelica dell'alterità della fede. Fino a oggi inedito, quel fondamentale discorso dossettiano è ora riproposto per la cura di Alessandro Barchi che con acribia filologica ne illumina la genesi. Due saggi di Fabrizio Mandreoli e Paolo Pombeni lo inquadrano rispettivamente sul versante teologico e su quello storico, aiutando il lettore a comprendere a fondo questo singolare documento che segna il distacco di un leader del cattolicesimo politico dal mito novecentesco del rilievo e della possibilità di una "democrazia cristiana".
