Description : Il martirio di Santa Barbara

Oil on canvas. The scene depicts the martyrdom of the young woman at the hand of her Dioscuro and heathen father. First of all, he shuts her in a tower (the one depicted in the background) because of her beauty and in order to protect her from the outside world and from her suitors and then, when he finds out that she had converted to Christianity, he tries repeatedly to persuade her to abjuration through torture. Since the young girl miraculously survives unscathed every time, he decides to kill her himself by beheading her. Italian School, 17th - 18th century.
