Description : Cena in Emmaus
An engraving by Abraham Van Lier from a painting by Pieter Aertsen (Amsterdam, 1508-1575). Religious subject, title at the bottom: 'Iesus in fractione panis cognoscitur a discipulis' (quote from the Gospel of Luke). The scene depicts a kitchen with fishes, real interest of the composers. The two artists Aertsen and Beuckelaer (Antwerp, 1533-1574) and the Italian Campi and Bassano were against the contemporary classical vision that enhanced holy, historical and mythological paintings. They preferred depicting genre scenes of everyday life, introducing a new laic sensibility focused on daily life and natural, which will bring to Caravaggio's realism. The engraving is in good condition, in frame. It comes from a private collection. Early 1600s.
