Artist: Alessandro Milesi (1856-1945)

Born in Venice in 1856, after a difficult childhood due to the poverty of the family, Alessandro Milesi at the age of thirteen he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, which he attended until 1873, with commitment and commendable results and achieving various prizes . At the end of 1873 the figure drawing professor Napoleone Nani, who had already made an effort to get him to work as a retoucher for a photographer, returned to Verona, called to direct the local Academy. Milesi followed him, and there, thanks to the master's help, he obtained important commissions. Returning to Venice he devoted himself exclusively to painting: all his works of this first period, especially the genre scenes, are close to those of the most important master of Venetian genre painting of those years, Gaetano Favretto, even in the choice of subjects, mainly sought after among the common people, to respond to the growing interest in scenes of daily Venetian life on the part of both collectors and foreign artists. Milesi created numerous paintings in particular that have as their theme the figure and family of the fisherman and the gondolier. He was also a good portrait painter. In 1886 Milesi married Maria Ciardi, sister of his friend and painter Guglielmo Ciardi. In 1888 he participated for the first time in the Venice Biennale and since then his presence in international and Italian shows and exhibitions has been constant. From 1895 he participated in all the Venetian Biennales until 1935, with the interval of the First World War in which he participated as a volunteer. Even if the more modern pictorial research and the avant-gardes seemed to be oriented decidedly in another direction with respect to his work, Milesi had a great public and sales success, marking the persistence of a certain collecting taste. Alessandro Milesi died in Venice in 1945.n
