Gli Isaak:una famiglia in trappola fra Hitler e Stalin

Author:

Publisher:  Arnoldo Mondadori Editore

Place of printing:  Milan

Year of publication:

Necklace:  The Trails

Relates the history of the Isaak family of Memel (now Klaipėda), Lithuania, during World War II, based on letters the author's mother received from her relatives until 1941 in Trieste, where she settled in 1937, and on interviews with surviving relatives. Describes the growing hostility against Jews in Memel, parallel to the rise of Nazism in Germany. Most of the family fled to other parts of Lithuania, where they experienced pogroms in 1941 and 1942, after the German invasion. The Church and the press were instrumental in reinforcing the hostility against the Jews, accusing them, among others, of being Russian collaborators. Some members of the family perished during the liquidation of the ghettos of Kovno and Vilna, some found refuge in the forest, and others managed to emigrate to Canada or Israel. The letters deal mainly with everyday questions; the writers avoided discussing the terrible circumstances which affected them. also summarizes political developments in Trieste during the war and the consequences they had on the Jews.
