Description : San Gennaro tra i leoni
Painting under glass. Neapolitan school. The Saint bishop, with his crosier and his prayer book, is in an arena, surrounded by lions, with Mt. Vesuvius in the background. The scene tells the story about when Januarius, who professed his Christian faith while living during the Christian prosecution of emperor Diocletian, was condemned to be eaten by lions in the Pozuoli amphitheatre; but after he gave a blessing, the miracle happened and the beats kneeled down harmless at his feet. The painting is presented in a re-gilded antique frame.
