Description : Madonna con Bambino e San Giovannino
Oil on panel. The delicate and suggestive painting reminds in the composition, pictorial modes, the faces, and the colours, of the ideals of the Renaissance that were object of attention and restoration in the first two decades of 19th century. The Virgin, peaceful and smiling, looks at her Son, who she is holding in her arms and who, in turn, is looking down, holding the flowers that Young Saint John is giving him, projecting himself from the bottom up, with his arms outstretched. It is a game of glances as well as gestures, with hands and arms linked together, converging and embracing Baby Jesus in the centre. In the background, on the left, there is a wide blurred landscape. The bright colours stand out, especially the sweet pink of the complexions against the red and light blue dress of the Virgin and the light blue of the background. The painting suggests a clear reference to Raffaello's art, in which the subject portrayed here was widely recurring; for example, similar in pose and faces, the Madonna Terranuova (at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin) or the Madonna Aldobrandini (at the National Gallery in London) for the exchange of flowers between the two kids. The painting here proposed, already restored, is presented in a beautiful frame from the end of 19th century, in gilded wood, carved with flower motifs.
