Description

As indicated in the title page, the volume reproduces the Reasons read in the meetings of the I.R. Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom, work dedicated to S.M. The Reigning Empress of Austria. The author Giuseppe Longhi links his name to the history of engraving in Italy: pupil of Vangelisti in the newly inaugurated Brera Academy in 1790, friend of Appiani, great experimenter of all techniques of graphic art, popularizer with his engravings of the Napoleonic enterprises, director for more than 30 years, from 1798 to his death in 1831, of the Brera engraving school, where he became the undisputed representative of the Academy's neoclassical artistic ideals, leaves with this treatise a sort of summa of his skills: death prevented him from completing the work (this, indicated as volume I, is actually the only one published), which was integrated by the biographical notes collected by Francesco Longhena, introduced by a beautiful portrait drawn and engraved by Pietro Anderloni. The text includes a physiognomy table, the last burin work of Longhi, surprised by his death on January 2, 1831. At the end of the volume, the list of students who learned the art of engraving under Cav. Giuseppe Longhi, and the list of prints engraved by Longhi that can be sold by the heir Carlo Francesco Longhi
