Description : Paesaggio all'alba con treno

Oil painting on canvas. Signed and dated 1890 in the lower right corner. The landscape view depicts an open and deserted countryside close to barren hills, crossed by the railway tracks; on the left the train, of which the red lights and the smoke of the locomotive stand out, piercing the darkness of the night that is ending: in the sky on the left the first glimpses of light of the advancing dawn open up. Born in Naples where he trained artistically, but later moved to Castrocielo (Fr) where he created numerous landscape views, Alfonso Simonetti was a portrait painter (in 1873 he made the portrait from life of Giuseppe Verdi) historical or genre scenes, but above all of landscapes. In the wake of the Posillipo school, Simonetti created a landscape painting of a romantic matrix, with clear views, attentive to the play of light and its effects on nature; he preferred moonlit nights, but also sunrises and sunsets, the phases of the day permeated with particular light effects. A painting almost identical to this one, but slightly smaller in size, was proposed at the Finarte auction in Milan in 1998. The work is presented in a style frame.
