Two-volume work in good condition. Editorial paperbacks preserved. Beautiful green full leather bindings with gilt titles and rich gilt decorations on the spines; the boards are framed by gilt fillets, gilt arabesques at the corners: abrasions on the edges, corners and hinges; scratches on the boards of the second volume; particularly darkened spines. Marbled back covers with edges decorated with recurring gilt motifs; marbled flyleaves. Tiny stamps (La Haye) on the upper outer corners of the verso of the flyleaves. On volume one also a pencil writing on the lower inner corner of the same page and writing in pencil on the following leaf. Browned side edges, slightly frayed; gilt head edges: dust spots. Collational formula: [π]⁸, 2-22⁸, 23⁴; [π]⁸, 2-22⁸. Leaves in excellent condition with wide margins. Text in French. Text in French.

Description
First edition of this Nouvelle Scène de la vie Parisienne, one of Balzac's most famous novels, published in two volumes in 1838, in a beautiful full leather binding with elegant gilded decorations on the covers and spines. In the appendix to the second volume appears the article by Edouard Orliac published in the Figaro on 15 December 1837 entitled Malheurs et Aventures de César Birotteau in which the turbulent editorial history of the novel is recounted “composed in 50 days by M. de Balzac, despite the printing; composed in 50 days by M. de Balzac, despite the printing”.
