Description
Only the first volume of this work, dedicated to the Dictionnaire étymologique et raisonné sur le jardinage. Jean-Roger Schabol, an interesting figure of ecclesiastic and horticulturist, in the substantial Preface to the Dictionary, sets himself the goal of educating "excellens Ouvriers" by applying a rational and scientific view to the art of gardening and horticulture, proposing innovations that he himself has experimented with. The volume is illustrated with 19 engraved plates and a beautiful engraving on the frontispiece depicting a glimpse of an Italian garden with the Virgilian verse Fortunatus et ille Deos qui novit agrestes surmounted by a tondo with the profile of Louis XV
