Description

Wonderful collection of Japanese poems translated into English and embellished with suggestive colored woodblock illustrations. The Blossom Songs are translations of Tanka, short poetic compositions of 31 syllables, taken from the Kokinshiu, anthology compiled in 906; the Sword Songs are instead the work of modern Japanese authors in Chinese style that evoke the spirit of the ancient Japanese warriors; the third volume widens the selection to classic Japanese poets beyond the Kokinshiu collection and adds a section dedicated to Love Songs. The translation is the work of Shotaro Kimura and Charlotte Peake, while the illustrations are by Japanese artists. To further embellish the volumes, we enclose a small lot of 7 Japanese postcards, found together with the box, dated 1926
