Oil on canvas. Signed and dated top right. Additional signature and date on the back. The self-taught artist Claudio Astrologo has favoured social subjects in his painting, without concentrating on denunciation, but rather on a reflection on man. Linked to the Roman milieu of Guttuso, in the post-war period he developed a realist type of figuration, which from the 1960s turned towards an abstract-expressionist language, later arriving at a sort of figurative experimentalism.

Paolo Astrologo was born in Brussels in 1928. He lives in Belgium and France, but in 1943 he settles in Rome. Self-taught painter, after the war he adopted a realist type of figuration. He exhibits in various group exhibitions organized by the P.C.I. such as: "Art against barbarism", Rome, 1951 and "The peasants and contemporary Italian painting", Bologna, 1952. In 1954 he held his first solo exhibition in Rome at the Galleria San Marco in which he exhibited works with portraits of peasants , workers, intellectuals and landscapes of the city suburbs. Around the mid-1950s he took part in the VII Rome Quadrennial and the XXVII Venice Biennale. Subsequently he accentuates the expressionistic component of his works influenced by the German expressionism of the 1920s. He exhibits in various Italian cities. In the mid-1960s he turned towards an abstract-expressionist language (an exhibition in Brussels from this period). In the early 70s he moved to London where he worked more as a restorer than an artist.
