Description : La morte di San Giuseppe
Oil painting on canvas. Northern Italian school of the XVII-XVIII century. The oval scene depicts the death of the holy putative father of Jesus, as tradition tells it, which took place in his old age in his home, assisted by his loved ones, Mary and Jesus who flank him, and by a group of little angels, one of which at the foot of the bed, holds the flowery stick symbol of the Saint; behind the dying man, a particular angel spreads his great wings, to gather the Holy Family under them. For this sweet and good death, in the company of two so holy and perfect people, St. Joseph is considered the saint of good death, invoked to accompany those who are close to death and ask for assistance at the moment of passing on to a better life. The work is permeated with light and bright colours, which soften the dramatic moment, rather emphasizing the glory of the Saint. Restored and relined, the painting is presented in a period frame.
