Sin dagli inizi della sua storia l'esposizione universale ha dimostrato una particolare attenzione per l'arte. Nella prima edizione, a Londra nel 1851, le rare sculture comparivano come isole nell'immenso paesaggio enciclopedico della produzione artigianale e industriale dell'epoca. In seguito la ricerca artistica si è ritagliata uno spazio sempre crescente e autonomo. Già a Dublino nel 1853 fu allestita un'imponente e spettacolare mostra che comprendeva preziose opere datate dal XIII al XVII secolo. L'interesse per gli aspetti culturali, artistici ed educativi si è protratto e ampliato nel corso del tempo, tanto che Expo Milano 2015 ha deciso di dedicare un suo padiglione a una grande e importante mostra ispirata al tema della manifestazione: "nutrire il pianeta, energia per la vita". Il progetto, che ha trovato il suo habitat nella triennale di Milano, è diventato "Arts & foods. Rituali dal 1851 " e si presenta come un'indagine sul rapporto tra i diversi linguaggi della creatività - dalla pittura al design, dalla fotografia alla moda, dall'architettura al cinema, dalla musica alla scultura - e i molteplici rituali del cibo in tutto il mondo. La pubblicazione si ispira al percorso e alle tematiche dell'esposizione. Il suo obiettivo è coinvolgere il lettore in un continuum di idee e immagini invitandolo a entrare nell'universo delle relazioni tra arti e cibi.

The Menil's collection of Byzantine and related icons is widely regarded as one of the most important in the United States. Comprising more than sixty works, many acquired by Dominique de Menil in 1985 from the noted British collector Eric Bradley, the group spans twelve hundred years, from the sixth to the eighteenth centuries, and encompasses a number of distinct cultures, including Greek, Balkan, and Russian. In this volume, the first publication to survey this diverse collection, leading scholars explore the history and meaning of these remarkable works, and their continuing power to surprise and impress.

Orthodox Christianity developed in the Near East during the Byzantine Empire, in time yielding eleven autocephalous communions of which the Greek, Russian, Romanian, Serbian, and Bulgarian Orthodox churches are the largest today. Each maintained the tradition of icon painting rooted in Byzantium but inflected it in distinctive ways. Transcending time and place through a delicate balance of tradition and innovation, these images of saintly or divine figures were designed to imprint their holy subjects on the human mind. Though largely dismissed as backward by Renaissance and Enlightenment Europeans, icons captured the imagination of early modernist painters, and contemporary audiences appreciate them as aesthetic objects.
