Description

A very rare work to be found complete in its 6 volumes in which all the mineral and thermal water sources of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany are described. The author, Giuseppe Giulj (1764-1842), a doctor and botanist, held the chair of Botany and Natural History at the University of Siena from 1822. In the Preface to this Natural History of all the mineral waters of Tuscany, he places the beginning of his field research work in 1823: a work that engaged him for many years in a personal and meticulous inspection of all the places where there was an outcrop of mineral and thermal waters. In the investigation, he always says in the preface, "the Doctor, the Geologist, the Statesman, the Chemist, the owner of the land" are involved. The author does not aim to be a theoretical treatise on mineral waters: he works on facts rather than theories, and in particular on facts that "known by men can bring them great advantages". The classification of the springs occurs according to two criteria: the territorial division (the Grand Duchy is divided into 27 sections) and the chemical composition of the waters. The existing springs and spas are then described on a territorial basis in brochures in which the author inserts a topographical description of the place, geognostic notes on the land, references to a previous literary history, a physical description of the spring, the results of the chemical examination, the medical application of the use of the waters (in the form of bathing, showering or ingestion) and muds with also the description of specific cases, the description of the regulations and costs of the spas existing on site.
