The Witch's Den 1930

Crayons on cardboard. Signed and dated at the bottom; on the back there is a label from the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Verona, which auctioned off numerous works by the artist that it owned. The work is accompanied by the purchase invoice from that auction in 1951, with the title of the work. Of humble origins, the Veronese artist Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca, even once he had become an established and appreciated artist, frequenting the Italian and international artistic and cultural environment, always maintained a bond with his city, a constant source of inspiration for his artistic production, and a bond with its poor; in 1939 he built the Villaggio Dall'Oca in Verona, for the benefit of the city's poor, and in 1941 he made a will, leaving all his money and his paintings to the city of Verona for charitable works. His painting was always of a purely veristic nature, influenced above all by contact with Giacomo Favretto. The witch's cave shown here actually refers to a poor and degraded environment, where a female figure emerges from a dark room, wrapped in a cloak that gives her a mysterious air. The work is presented in a frame.

Caccioni, an artist who was born, trained and still lives in Bologna, is one of the protagonists of a generation that has now reached a definitive linguistic maturity and occupies a prominent place within the contemporary artistic panorama. His research mainly uses unusual materials such as acetates, PVC and, more recently, stage backdrops from 19th-century theatrical works, on which he intervenes by painting shapes drawn from a personal memory and from suggestions coming from different cultures and historical periods. A recurring element in Luca Caccioni's work is writing, a self-signifying sign that designs the work and is capable of recounting thoughts; working by superimposition, the images are constructed by adding or subtracting color on the various supports. Oil on canvas. The scene shows the results of a battle, with survivors providing first aid to the wounded, carrying the bodies of their fallen comrades, and a friar blessing the dying. Officers on horseback count the victims and honor them. The scene is set in an open territory on the banks of a river, with rugged mountain slopes in the background. The rosy atmosphere of a sunset underlines the end of the day, of the battle, of the life lost in battle. The work is presented in a contemporary frame.

Oil on canvas. Second half of the 18th century. A portion of a large ruined architectural structure fills the entire scene: a porch surmounted by a balustrade, overgrown with plants, surrounds a courtyard where various popular figures move, busy with their activities. A bright blue sky surmounts the structure and the light filters through one of the arches to create a play of light and shadows under the portico. On the back of the frame there is an attribution to Gaetano Vetturali (1701-1783), even if the quality of the figures here appears superior to those of the artist from Lucca, who established himself in his territory for his architectural caprices of great scenographic impact. The painting is presented in a gilded frame in style.
