Description : Adorazione dei pastori

Oil on canvas. Venetian school of the 17th century. Looking at the models spread by Jacopo Bassano, the painting presents a scene full of figures and surrounding elements typical of pastoral life, elegant but with a rustic simplicity. The shepherds create with Mary and Joseph a circle of figures adoring the Baby Jesus, a circle in which the animals, the ox and the sheep also participate, while the little angels complete the scene by circling above. The work can be traced back to the production of Baldassarre D'Anna, a painter born in Venice who trained with Leonardo Corona, of whom he reproduced the chromatic liveliness and the chiaroscuro instance, and then worked in Venice, in Dalmatia, in Istria and in the whole Friuli area. It is placed in the artist's best phase, between 1610 and 1620, in particular we find the same characteristics and many characters of the series of eight canvases made around 1620 for the Santuario delle Grazie in Cordovado in the province of Pordenone: similar are the vivid colors spread with clear backgrounds and sharp draperies, the energetic contours, the severe and marked physiognomies that are found both in the shepherds and in the kneeling Madonna. We also find in the work the realistic notes "alla Bassano", such as the basket of eggs from which a napkin emerges, the architectures devoid of any monumentality. Due to its small size, this canvas can be traced back to a private commission, intended for personal devotion or for collecting. The painting, restored and relined, is presented in a gilded frame in style. The painting is accompanied by an expertise.

Additional Information

Artist: Baldassarre D'Anna (1572 ca-1646)

Born in Venice around 1560, from a family of Flemish merchants living in the city, Baldassarre D'Anna is mentioned for the first time in the fraternity of Venetian painters in 1593. Despite his origins, D'Anna did not maintain any relationship with his motherland, Flanders, and instead fully integrated into the pictorial and artistic climate of Venice between the end of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. The panorama was then dominated by painters of the so-called "seven manners", and public commissions, both religious and civil, tended towards the creation of large historical or Christological cycles. D'Anna came into direct contact with this painting through his teacher, Leonardo Corona, who was active between 1600 and 1605 for the creation of the nine canvases of the Scuola di S. Fantin (now the Venetian Athenaeum). The activity of the master for his hometown was conspicuous, now it is almost completely lost, but in the meantime the artist had found markets outside of Venice and of this production there is ample evidence. A large group of his works is preserved in Brno, in the Jesuit church: a cycle of eight Mariological canvases, of which the sixth, an Assumption of Mary, is signed "Baldissera de Anna P.". A second group concerns the painter's activity in Dalmatia. This Dalmatian group shows a clear impoverishment of manners and an ever greater approach to the more popular, rural or very peripheral cadences of late Venetian Mannerism. D'Anna is mentioned for the last time in the fraternity of Venetian painters in 1639, but his name appears again in a "tansa" of 1642: shortly after this, it is believed, the date of his death must have fallen.
