Italian modernist painter Mario Sironi's (1885-1961) paintings spoke through a unique palette of incessantly dialectical lights and shadows, blacks and whites, browns and ochres. Reproduced here is a selection of works that, with the exception of his futurist period, span his entire career: the urban landscapes of the 20s, compositions of the 30s, and explosions of elaborate multiple works of the 40s and 50s. Sironi's interests were wide-ranging and included not only painting and sculpture but also advertising graphics, theatrical staging, architecture, and engineering. Allegations of fascist leanings clouded his reputation after World War II and he spent the last twenty years of his life in relative poverty and obscurity. This is among the first publications to reexamine his artistic legacy.
