Additional Information
Artist: John Watson Gordon (1788-1864)
Born in Edinburgh in 1788, John Watson Gordon studied at the State School of Drawing, showing a natural aptitude for art. In 1808 he exhibited for the first time, dedicating himself to the genre of landscape, but later he specialized in portraiture. One of his most important works was the portrait of Sir Walter Scott made in 1820, followed by the effigies of J. G. Lockhart, Sir Archibald Alison and De Quincey. During the last twenty years of his life he painted many illustrious English people and it is significant that David Cox, the famous landscape painter, chose Watson Gordon to have his portrait painted. Gordon was one of the distinguished members of the Royal Scottish Academy, later becoming its president in 1850, while the following year he was appointed court painter and received the honor of knighthood. From 1841 he was a fellow of the Royal Academy, and in 1851 he was elected a Royal Academician.Age: 19th Century / 1801 - 1900

Technical specification: Oil on Canvas
