Il proverbio esprime un'idea di senso comune ma potenzialmente fuorviante, perché immagini e linguaggio appartengono a un unico ambiente di significati nel quale siamo immersi. Questo libro si propone, in un modo accessibile al lettore, di indagare le proprietà del ragionamento per immagini e di documentarne l'impatto sulla cognizione umana, in una prospettiva sensibile in ugual misura a contributi di diverse discipline. Il pensiero umano attiva costantemente un sistema di rappresentazioni eterogenee interagenti fra loro, visive, spaziali, linguistiche. La continua e complessa interazione tra il figurale e il linguistico, al centro di ogni indagine sul ruolo cognitivo delle immagini, è stata generalmente trascurata dalla logica e da buona parte della filosofia del Novecento, che hanno tralasciato il ragionamento analogico. Ma è lecito chiedersi: esiste davvero un confitto tra logica e visione o piuttosto la visione non costituisce altro che il proseguimento della logica con altri mezzi? Non basta infatti vedere un'immagine per potervi riconoscere un significato. "Vedere" è piuttosto il risultato di un complesso percorso culturale che diamo per scontato: è anche un fatto di lettura.
