Pencil with withing on paper. Signature on the left, date and place (Milan) on the right. Jacob, cousin of the famous cabinetmaker Georges Jacob, was David's pupil and he became official designer of prince Eugène Beauharnais. In Italy, he made these two small and refined portrays: general Domenico Pino (1760-1826) was one of the most important and effective Napoleonic generals in Italy. He embraced the military career in Parma as Cavalry Captain and after 1796 he took part to Napoleon's Italian adventure. He probably saw an opportunity of ascent and he took it, becoming brigadier general in 1798 and Lieutenant General in 1800. In 1808 he married Vittoria Peluso (1766-1828), an Italian ballerina among the most appreciated of the period. She was previously married with the marquis Bartolomeo Calderari. The couple restored the famous Villa d'Este in Cernobbio and she inherited it when her husband died. After her marriage with general Pino, she amended again the Villa to celebrate her husband's victories and to host the winning Napoleonic troops. Both the portrays are presented in coeval gilded frames. 1814.
