Description : San Francesco da Paola
Oil on canvas. Neapolitan school. Effective portrait, not really idealized but very realistic instead, human in his contemplative attitude, of the hermit saint (1416-1507) from Paola (Cosenza), dressed in a tunic with a cane in hand and a flowing white beard; the writing "Charitas" is on top right, where his gaze is directed. That was his motto and, by extension, of the Order he founded, the Order of Minims. There is a small image bottom right that reminds of a particular cult of the Saint: among the miracles attributed to him there is the crossing of the canal of the strait of Messina on his cape, who made him become the patron of Italian seafarers. The painting, restoed and recanvased, is presented in a gilded frame in style.
