Description : Ritratto di papa Pio VII
Oil on canvas. Portrait of Pope Pius VII, elected to the papal throne in 1800. The portrait is less conventional than the rest of the official portraits of pontiffs, usually pictured while sitting on the papal chair during the act of blessing; the painting here proposed portrays a close-uo of the Pope, tired and worn out, without any pastoral symbols, it seems inspired by the famous portrait of Pius VII realized in 1815 by Vincenzo Camuccini, who painted him during his imprisonment in Savona by Napoleon Bonaparte (imprisonment that lasted overall from 1809 to 1814, even if in different locations); in that painting the Pontiff appears tired and worn out. The painting, already restored and reframed, is presented in a gilded frame in style.
