Description : Morte di San Francesco Saverio
Oil on copper. Francis Xavier, Jesuit and Spanish missionary of the sixteenth century, was an evangelizer in the countries of Asia, especially in the East Indies; he fell ill during a journey from Malacca to the island of Sancian, he died in 1552, unable to receive any sacrament and was deprived of a Christian burial. The scene portrays the lifeless body of the saint, placed on a straw mattress on the bare ground, watched over by some commoners who venerate him, and with a host of angels ready to welcome him into heaven. The work presented in a late 19th century frame.
