Oil painting on canvas. Signed lower left. The small landscape offers a glimpse of a corner of the countryside near a stony stream, behind which green hills rise first, then higher and blue peaks. William Baptiste Baird, born in Chicago, trained pictorially in Europe at the Barbizon school, in northern France, a realist landscape current. The painting is presented in a coeval gilded frame (early 1900s).

Artist: William Baptiste Baird (1847-1917)
Born in 1847 in Chicago, William Baptiste Baird was an American painter and draftsman of the Barbizon School. Arriving in Paris to complete his training in the studio of Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893), Baird specialized in painting rural subjects and animals, mainly farmyard ones. He painted landscapes in the forest of Fontainebleau, in Barbizon, traveled to Brittany in the Pont-Aven region and befriended other American painters working there. He also traveled to Switzerland and the French Riviera. He has participated in various exhibitions and salons where he obtained medals in Nice and Versailles. William Baird died in 1917.
