Antique Painting Mythological Subject Oil on Canvas XVII Century

Oil on canvas. Roman school of the 17th century. In classical mythology, the goddess Venus, wife of Vulcan, had him forge weapons for her son Aeneas. In the scene, set in the cave where the forge is located, Vulcan is in fact forging a suit of armor on the anvil, with the help of his assistants, while Venus, accompanied by the faithful Cupid, arrives to check the work. Thetis, the sea nymph mother of Achilles, also commissioned the weapons for her son to the same god Vulcan, to protect him during the Trojan War. Restored and relined, the painting has a loss of color at the top right. It is presented in an early 1900s frame, contemporary to the restoration.

Mixed media on canvas. Signature, title and date of the work on the back. After an initial period in figurative style, the Milanese painter Mario Arlati soon finds a new dimension, which will become characteristic of all his work. In Ibiza, in fact, where he has often lived since the 1970s, he discovers and makes his own the informal material of the Spanish school which, fused with the wild dimension of the island, gives life to works of great consistency in which the artist literally moves the material: lacerations, scratches, stratifications, colors, but also energy, gesture, emotions, poetry. Arlati';s material is a representation of his intimate soul, made of feelings, emotions and evocations of the landscape. The work is mounted in a plexiglass case.

Oil on canvas. The portrait of a gentleman is accompanied by the inscription at the top left "Paulus Castellanus Sanator". The word Castellanus could be the surname, very common and identifying the inhabitant of a castle, not necessarily the lord but a member of the family. The term Sanator identifies the man as a healer, the family doctor. The painting is presented in an antique frame.

Oil on canvas. The subject depicted tells a biblical episode from the Old Testament: Susanna, the beautiful and chaste wife of Joachim, a rich Jew, is threatened by two elderly judges of the people while she is bathing in her garden. This episode has been widely reproduced in art, as an opportunity to exalt female beauty and condemn sinful voluptuousness. In the scene, the female figure of Susanna, half-dressed, sits in the foreground on the left, on the balustrade of a gushing fountain in the garden, intent on immersing herself, but pointing with her hand to the two old men on the right, who are spying on her, hidden behind a bush. Unusual in the scene is the figure of the other woman, probably a maidservant of Susanna, also half-dressed, probably introduced to further exalt female nudity. In the background appears the garden of the villa, characterized by symmetrical and regular flower beds. Also peculiar is the presence, in the distance behind Susanna's head, of three stylized figures, who seem to run towards her, perhaps to warn her of danger. The work, in the first canvas, has a slight break in the upper left, and small spots of paint. It is presented in an early 1900's frame.

Of the same subject but with characters, there is a version on canvas by the Milanese artist, preserved in the civic Raccolta d'arte Museo dell'Ottocento of Villa Belgioioso Bonaparte, in Milan. Luigi Bisi specialized in interior views of churches in Lombardy, with a predilection for the Milan Cathedral. The work is presented in a frame.

Mixed media on paper. Title but readable at the bottom; on the back the artist's stamp with signature, date and title (Pour poissons - Studio sospeso). Caccioni, an artist who was born, trained and still lives in Bologna, is one of the protagonists of a generation that has now reached a definitive linguistic maturity and occupies a prominent space within the contemporary artistic panorama. His research mainly uses unusual materials such as acetates, PVC and, more recently, stage backdrops of nineteenth-century theatrical works, on which he intervenes by painting shapes drawn from a personal memory and from suggestions coming from different cultures and historical periods. A recurring element in Luca Caccioni's work is writing, a self-signifying sign that designs the work and is capable of recounting thoughts; working by superimposition, the images are constructed by adding or subtracting color on the various supports. Jean Cocteau was a multifaceted artist: writer, playwright, playwright, he also dabbled in visual arts, loving to experiment with all the avant-gardes of his century. Cocteau published his first book of drawings in 1923, at just 36 years old. In it the poet portrayed his friends Raymond Radiguet, Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, Francis Poulenc, but also numerous scenes of daily life in Paris, Nijinski's Russian ballets, allegories, caricatures, poetic images. Cocteau revealed himself to be a talented sketcher, but above all an artist capable of capturing the essence of faces, behaviors, human weaknesses. The theme of the face, or rather of faces, often two profiles facing each other, vis à vis, recurs in his pictorial production. In 1962 the artist completed the construction of the open-air theatre in Cap d'Ail, on the French Mediterranean coast, whose flooring is decorated with this subject, two faces with a Greek profile facing each other, with an eye in between; the subject was then re-proposed by him in the following period - moreover the one imminent to his sudden death -, with different variations. In the drawing presented here we find the two Greek profiles, separated by the third eye but also by two twisted snakes, while in the drawing of the theatre we find leaves. The work is presented in a frame.

The central protagonist of the scene is the god Bacchus, with his head encircled by a vine wreath, partially covered by a red cloth, with one hand he holds a flowering spear, with the other he holds a bunch of grapes high above the gaping jaws of a wild dog, which lies stretched out on the ground in front of him, with a cupid who, sitting on his belly, holds his muzzle open. In the background a landscape tinged with the reddish lights of a sunset. The painting was restored and relined at the end of the 19th century, and is presented in a frame from the same period.

The Mask

Oil on canvas. The painting reproduces in rather detail the work of the same name painted in 1869 by the Emilian painter Gaetano Chierici, an artist who became famous for a large production of scenes of peasant life, captured in rustic interiors, interpreted through an intimate sentimental adhesion and a clear formal realism, which tell of a small happy and always serene world, indeed often joyful despite poverty, because devoid of any intent of social denunciation, but rather representative of the happy conception of family that the artist had. These paintings of his had such success with the bourgeoisie of the time, that they were replicated several times by the artist's own workshop and subsequently also by other painters. Chierici almost always set the scene inside a humble peasant kitchen, full of objects described in minute detail, populated by children intent on their daily activities, by adults who watch them happily and amused: here we see the child who suddenly enters the kitchen, wearing a grotesque mask on his face and thus frightening his little sister, who abandons her food to run and cling to the skirts of her mother, intent on the hearth, who scolds her son brandishing the ladle. The work is presented in a carved and gilded wooden frame from the late 19th century.
