Description
Libretto of the first performance of the choreographic action Gabriella di Vergy with music by various authors performed at the Real Teatro S. Carlo. As indicated on the frontispiece, it is a revival by his brother Ferdinando of a choreography by the very famous dancer and choreographer Gaetano Gioia (1764-1826). Neapolitan, son of an artist (his father Antonio was a dancer and choreographer), Gaetano trod the stages of all Europe as a highly sought-after dancer. His debut as a choreographer dates back to 1789; in 1793 he was already the first choreographer of La Scala. He returned to Naples in 1795 as principal choreographer at the S. Carlo in Naples. Between 1798 and 1826, the year of his death, he signed 220 choreographies. The libretto is embellished with a full leather binding with the coat of arms of the reigning house of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies on the gold plates. The performers of the first performance and the names of the theatre's workers are indicated
