Description

Libretto of the first performance of the opera La fedeli alla prova by the Neapolitan schoolmaster Placido Mandanici (1799-1852): after studying at the S. Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples, Mandanici was appointed composer of music and director of dances for the royal theatres (S. Carlo and del Fondo), a position he held from 1825 to 1834. Transferred to Milan where he opened a singing school, he composed the opera for the Teatro del Fondo in Naples, the libretto of which we present here. This Neapolitan theatre, inaugurated in 1779 with L'infedele fedele by Cimarosa, takes its name from the “Fondo di separazione dei lucri” (Separation of Profits Fund) which financed its construction with the proceeds from the sale of assets confiscated from the Jesuits. In 1799 it changed its name to Teatro Patriottico and was inaugurated with the staging of Vincenzo Monti's Aristodemo, becoming a stage for political dramas. With the restoration, the theatre returned to its original musical vocation; a great impresario was Barbaja who brought the greatest musicians of the time to Naples, from Rossini to Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi. If the name of Mandanici is not known to music lovers today, at the time his works were very successful even on demanding stages such as La Scala in Milan or Carignano in Turin. He died in exile in Genoa for his positions close to the patriotic demands of the Risorgimento. The libretto is embellished with a full leather binding with the coat of arms of the reigning house of Bourbon of the Two Sicilies on the gold plates. The performers of the first performance are indicated
