Additional Information
Artist: Domenico De Bernardi (1892-1963)
Born in Besozzo (Va) in 1892, Domenico De Bernardi initially enrolled in the faculty of engineering at the University of Pavia, but abandoned his studies in 1911 to devote himself to painting, training as a self-taught, albeit with some teachings given to him by Ludovico Cavalieri. In 1920 he made his debut at the Venice Biennale, starting an exhibition career that saw him participate, in addition to several editions of the Venetian exhibition, in important Italian collective exhibitions. He ordered some solo exhibitions at the Galleria Pesaro and the Società Permanente in Milan. His painting is part of the Lombard landscape tradition of the 19th and 20th century, close to the Scapigliatura movement, albeit with some peculiarities derived from a trip to Libya in the 1930s, from which he returned with a more lively and Mediterranean palette. His paintings are preserved in the modern art galleries of Milan, Rome and Turin, as well as in the art collections of the Cariplo Foundation. De Bernardi died in Besozzo in 1963.
