Description
Oil on canvas. Restored and relined. This wonderful painting depicts one of the most successful and favorite subjects of the artist from Bologna, during the eight decade of 1600s. Cignani was born in Bologna from a noble family and was probably the most esteemed painter of the city, comparable to Carlo Maratta in Rome. He studied with G.B. Cairo and then he continued his education at Fancesco Albani's studio. During the 1670s, Cignani's studio was well-known and he used to work for the most important patrician families such as Davia, Albergati and Sampieri in Bologna, Farnese in Parma and Pallavicini in Rome. Among his customers, there were also patrician North-European families, such as the king of Poland, the prince Schonborm. The canvas belongs to this historical period. Charity represented one of the most beloved subjects depicted by the artist. In this case, the mother surrounded by five children becomes the allegory of the five senses, represented through some narrative elements: the bell for hearing, the bunch of flowers for smell, the baby for taste, the mirror for sight and the caress for touch. Presented in a frame of late 1800s.
