Description

Rare program of the “wise” of the end of the year of one of the most prestigious colleges in italy, took place in the presence of the Duchess Maria Luigia. The Ducal Collegio dei Nobili was founded in Parma to Ranuccio I Farnese in 1601. Entrusted to the guidance of the Jesuits, were the offspring of the most important noble families in catholic Italian and european, between 10 and 20 years, coming in the EIGHTEENTH century to accommodate up to 300 students. After the close of the Napoleonic period, Mary Louise founded the College in 1815, entrusting its management to the Benedictines of the Abbey of St. John the Evangelist. Since its foundation the aim of the College was to train gentleman complete: humanities and religious education were, therefore, side-by-side training in the science of chivalry, the fencing, the military architecture, dance, riding, drawing, calligraphy, in addition to the singing, to the music and to the study of foreign languages. At the end of the year the students performed in the Theatres of Honor, a sort of “wise men” who extolled the ideal of the gentleman, cultured, refined, and skilled in the exercises of chivalry, and received honorable mentions for their commitment and success in the various disciplines. All of this was recorded in dossiers published by the Tipografia Ducale, in clear and elegant characters of tradition Bodoniana characteristic of this printing. These dossiers were part of the politics of visibility and interaction with the world and the noble Italian and european institution in the province of parma: in the reports on the annual rate and in the nomenclature of the Academies and of the prizewinners, printed and also intended for flung corners of Europe, the noble families brought their young into the world of the aristocracy. The dossier opens with the register of the Academy of the Chosen, established within the college in 1672, by order of duke Ranuccio II Farnese. The institution, initially restricted to the humanities, but then extended also to the philosophy and weapons, meet the boarding fees for the merits, distinguished themselves in those matters. At the head of the academy was every year elected a prince, with the right to be immortalized in a portrait exhibited in the college, some city councillors and a secretary. In 1822 was founded the Academy of the Ascenders, that is reserved to very young learners, a sort of anteroom to admission to the Academy of the Chosen. The lists of the members of the two Academies follows the program of the Exercises of Chivalry: musical performances, dances and battles of fencing with the names of the performers. Then comes the list of boarding fees, which were distinct in the various disciplines and the list of teachers.
