Description : Maria Maddalena sostenuta da angeli
Oil on canvas. The dramatic scene sees mary Magdalene in ecstasy, to the waist, naked and sensually covered only in part by the flowing hair which is supported by four cupids, chubby-faced, smiling and lively. The work refers to the production of Francesco Cairo, a well-known artist from lombardy, first pupil of Morazzone, then a follower of Cerano, in the SEVENTEENTH century was distinguished for his depictions of characters, loads of dramatic tension, expressed in the gestures and in the color; in particular, the applicant was in his works the theme of tragedy the most violent expressed in female figures in half bust, leaving no space, in the framework, so that their gestures loads, and tormented. In the production of Cairo, the subjects were often the applicants: in particular, the theme of the penitent Magdalen - depicted busty and full of sensuality but at the same time, with strong spiritual tension - was repeatedly addressed by the artist and, with him, from his workshop. The canvas was more important, with the subject almost identical to the one proposed here but slightly smaller (73 x 100 cm), was beaten to 44.640 € at the auction in Milan, Christie's in June 2006, coming apparently from the same collection of Francesco del Cairo Firmer. In the photograph collection are cataloged in different canvases or boards of the same subject, attributed to Francesco Del Cairo or, at least, to his workshop, demonstrating how, for the success of his first work, the teacher received numerous other requests, and made to produce to its students, with small differences in the size and in the details. Our canvas may be just one of these works of a workshop, because even if the quality is very high, it is not sufficient to justify the attribution directly to the hand of the master. The work, already restored and ritelata, is presented in full frame style.
