Lithography. Signed lower left. Published by Arthur Tooth in London. The scene is typical of the painter of Italian-Austrian origins: Eugene de Blaas favored cute and often mischievous genre scenes, with girls and young men (often placed in Venetian streets but not only) intent on chatting, gossiping and courtship games. His favorite subject was the common female figure, depicted with an angelic face with diaphanous skin and a mischievous and romantic look, described with bright colors and with excellent technique in her daily environment. The lithograph has widespread humidity stains. In a mid-20th century frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Eugene De Blaas (1843-1931)

Eugenio was born in Albano, near Rome, in 1843, to an Austrian father (Karl von Blaas) and an Italian mother. His father Karl was a Nazarene painter, who moved with his family to Venice in 1856, becoming a professor at the Venice Academy. Eugene studied at the Academy of Rome and the Academy of Venice, a pupil of his father Karl; in 1860 he won the Selvatico prize and already exhibited in the rooms of the Academy. His first work of some importance dates back to 1863, an altarpiece for the parish church of San Valentino in Merano (today in the Domus Mercatoruma in Bolzano). Over the years, various works followed, mostly on the theme of Venetian landscapes and genre scenes depicting the life of fishermen, gondoliers and Venetian beauties. He was also a portraitist of Roman and Venetian nobles. His delicate style and bright colors were much appreciated by the Anglo-Saxon public. In fact his paintings have been exhibited in many English museums. He exhibited in Italy and abroad: in Vienna, in London between 1875 and 1892; in Paris, Berlin, Munich, Brussels and St. Petersburg. From 1884 to 1890 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Painting at the Academy of Venice. He died in Venice in 1931. His works are exhibited in museums in Leicester, Melbourne, Nottingham, Sheffield, Sydney, Vienna and Trieste.
