Description
In the complex of interventions for the redevelopment of the area of the Imperial Forums desired by Mussolini, the construction of a large Auditorium was planned. To respond to the competition announced for the presentation of the project, Mario Palanti, an acclaimed architect of eclectic style in Argentina and Paraguay for years, returned to Italy and worked on the new project for four years: our volume gives an account of this long work, with the presentation of the various hypotheses taken into consideration and with the development of the two chosen: a theater "of circular shape with three orders of galleries, with the orchestra stage and choirs entirely located in the Great Hall, 50 meters in diameter, with the possibility of seating 7000 people. Height of the dome 35 meters"; an "amphitheater in the shape of a comb shell, with the orchestra and choirs located towards the center of the hall with a capacity of 8000 people seated". The two projects are splendidly illustrated by 42 tables of plans, elevations, plaster models, which also develop the rejected hypotheses and which give us back true masterpieces of rationalist architecture. The competition was not followed up and Palanti had his work published by Rizzoli on quality paper in 300 copies "not for sale of a very private nature". Our copy, also with an autographed consignment to the engineer Bernardino Nogara, bears the number 8
