Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left. Eliseo Sala is celebrated by contemporary critics as a prominent portraitist in the Lombardy panorama. In fact, he carried out many important commissions on behalf of royal, noble and upper-middle-class families, as well as prestigious political figures. In his maturity, his art was oriented almost exclusively towards veristic portraiture and historical Romanticism, rendered with immediate painting, of extreme chromatic refinement, rich in chiaroscuro and an in-depth psychological investigation, which often reproduces the ideals of the Risorgimento that were typical of his personal beliefs. Presented here is the artist's portrait of a lady of the wealthy bourgeoisie, which well expresses the intense capacity for realism and psychological introspection that emanates from the woman's gaze. The painting is presented in a 19th-century gold frame.

Additional Information

Artist: Eliseo Sala (1813-1879)

Eliseo Sala, born in Milan in 1813, enrolled in 1832 at the Brera Academy, where he attended the architecture courses held by Carlo Amati and the nude school with the neoclassicist Luigi Sabatelli and Filippo Comerio, in the same period as Luigi Conconi, Cherubino Cornienti and Domenico Induno and where in 1835 and 1836 he was awarded a silver medal for some reproductions. In 1837 he made his debut with six portraits at the Exhibition of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where the following year he proposed The Flagellation of Christ. Starting in 1839 he undertook a series of training trips with his friend Ferdinando Bassi from Trentino to Venice, to Rome where he became friends with Francesco Coghetti from whom he learned notions on the use of color typical of the Venetian school, to France and England. From 1841 he participated in several editions of the Brera exhibition with portraits and some historical paintings. In 1844 he was appointed art member of the Brera Academy. In September 1848, due to the situation of political instability and his anti-Austrian ideals, he moved to Intra and then to Turin, where he created numerous commissioned portraits and participated in the exhibition of the Società promotrice di Belle Arti with two works with clear patriotic references. After his marriage to Angiola Robecchi, he entered the environment of the Lombard exiles where he became friends with Gabrio Casati, Teodoro Lechi and Count Carlo Carignani, from whom he received numerous commissions for portraits. In 1851 the Duke of Genoa Ferdinand of Savoy commissioned him to paint a portrait of his wife Elizabeth of Saxony. In 1854 he returned to Paris to execute two portraits commissioned by Countess Emilia Sommariva, and the following year he exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. In 1858 he had an important meeting with the entrepreneur and collector of Jewish art Emilio Vitta, who in 1860 introduced him to Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, President of the Council of Ministers, whom Sala portrayed in a work exhibited the following year at the Promotrice in Turin and then donated to the Reale Istituto Lombardo di Scienze. In 1866 he participated for the last time in the Brera Fine Arts Exhibition with the Portrait of Massimo d'Azeglio, which he sent to the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867. In the same year, King Vittorio Emanuele II awarded him the title of baron, which gave Sala social status and economic prosperity. On September 20, 1872, he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy and member of the executive committee of the second National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan. In 1877, Eliseo Sala suffered a stroke, which led to his death in 1879, in his home in Triuggio. Eliseo Sala died in
