Additional Information
Artist: Gennaro Villani (1885-1948)
Born in Naples in 1885, Gennaro Villani began his artistic career at a young age and lived and worked between Italy and France. He stayed in Paris from 1912 to 1914 and during his time in Paris he was invited to join French Academies. In Naples he was a student of Michele Cammarano - whose teaching was based on a rigorous recovery from life, of Gaetano Esposito and Vincenzo Volpe. But with the experiences gained in France and with the knowledge acquired of the French Impressionists and Fauve painters, his style was based on a freer use of color and diversified chromatic ranges. In the thirties his work was strongly influenced by the style of the Novecento artistic movement, with a return to the plastic-volumetric research of tradition. Only in the forties and in the last period of his life did he return to a freer use of color. From 1922 to 1925 he first held a teaching position at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lucca and then the chair of Landscape at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. Villani participated repeatedly in the Venice Biennale, the Rome Biennale, the Turin Quadrennial, as well as exhibiting in numerous foreign cities. Gennari Villano died in Naples in 1948.Age: 20th Century / 1901 - 2000

Technical specification: Oil on Cardboard
