In Isaiah Berlin: Liberty, Pluralism and Liberalism, George Crowder provides both an accessible introduction to Berlin's ideas and an original contribution to political theory.

Berlin's range of interests and learning was vast but united by a single overarching project: the uncovering of the conceptual roots of twentieth-century totalitarianism. He traces these through three levels of analysis: the distortion of the concept of freedom by thinkers such as Rousseau, Fichte, Hegel and Marx; the scientism of the Enlightenment and irrationalism of the Counter-Enlightenment and romanticism; and moral monism, the idea that all ethical questions can be answered by reference to a single moral law. Against monism, Berlin asserts the claims of value pluralism, which he aligns with a politics of liberal moderation.

In this new assessment, Crowder argues that Berlin's critique of the modern enemies of liberty is exciting and powerful, but also that the coherence of his thought is threatened by a tension between its liberal and pluralist elements. Crowder goes on to suggest how that tension can be resolved by appeal to arguments that go beyond the case actually presented by Berlin but which remain within the spirit of his general outlook.

L'affermarsi della razionalità scientifica e della pratica tecnica in tutti i domìni del vissuto sono l'aspetto caratterizzante della nostra cultura, l'"ambiente" nel quale ci troviamo a vivere e ad agire. Lo sviluppo scientifico-tecnico, dalla modernità fino ai giorni nostri, ha prodotto un effetto di sradicamento e di destabilizzazione: l'uomo non è più davanti a una realtà stabile alla quale può rapportarsi, bensì a una realtà incompiuta che egli stesso quotidianamente trasforma. L'universo non è più un 'cosmo', ma un mondo penetrato dall'azione dell'uomo che, pertanto, è chiamato a riflettere sempre di nuovo sulla propria incidenza e responsabilità. Tale situazione determina un maggior rilievo dell'etica, posta di fronte a problemi inediti. Scienza ed etica sono entrambe "dimensioni" dell'esistenza. In quest'opera, Jean Ladrière, mostra come l'etica sia dimensione originaria dell'esistenza, ma esistenza e azione si svolgono in un orizzonte che non è più solo il "mondo della vita" né solo il mondo della natura: è il "mondo degli artefatti", prodotto dal nostro intervento scientifico-tecnico. La scienza e le sue molteplici applicazioni tecniche sono un aspetto determinante con il quale bisogna fare i conti, non per esorcizzarlo, ma per meglio comprenderlo nelle sue potenzialità e nei suoi limiti, affinché l'intervento dell'uomo nel mondo sia veramente azione umana, libera, ragionevole e responsabile.
