Two volumes and 32 plates divided into two booklets enclosed by tissue papers in a cardboard shirt and slipcase: the slipcase shows dust spots (particularly marked on the upper side) and abrasions on the edges and plates; the cardboard shirt with rather faded titles on the back has abrasions on the back and on the hinges, yellowing and dust spots; the two volumes with loose quinterni with folded paper jackets are well preserved and partially intact, the plates inside are protected by burnished tissue papers, which have caused the front papers to be lightly browned; the engraved plates are well preserved, enclosed in burnished tissue. Montesquieu's classic text is enriched by 32 tasty etchings by Pierre Rousseau. Limited edition as indicated in the colophon: Cette édition réalisée par Paul Durupt pour le compte des Éditions André Vial a été achevée d'primer en mil neu cent quarante-huit par les Frères Priester, in Paris, et le eaux-fortes dans les ateliers of impressions en taille-douce of "La tradition", in Malakoff, près Paris. Le tirage a été limitedé to 1400 exemplaires numérotés et composés comme suit: 32 exemplaires sur vélin d'Arches a la forme, n. 1 to 32, auxquels il a été ajouté un état avec remarque des 32 eaux-fortes, tiré en noir, une aquarelle original et un cuivre encré. 16 exemplaires sur vélin d'arches a la forme, n. 33 to 48, auxquels il a été a jouté un état avec remarque des 32 eaux-fortes, tiré en noir et deux croquis. 75 exemplaires sur vélin d'arches a la forme, n. 49 to 123, auxquels il a été ajouté en état avec remarque des 32 eaux-fortes, tiré en noir. 1277 exemplaires sur vélin de lana, no. 124 to 1400. Il a été tiré en plus, 30 exemplaires on vélin de lana, numérotés en chiffres romains de I a XXX, et quelques exemplaires nominatifs, destinés for the artist and aux collaborateurs de cette édition.
