Fecha de publicación:

A biography of the Jewish Italian industrialist Federico Jarach (Torino, 1874 - Milano, 1951). He was the owner of a large metal factory in Milano and held high positions in the northern Italian federations of industry. In his military service in the navy, he achieved the rank of Corvette captain (equivalent to Lieutenant Commander). In 1931 he became the president of the Jewish Community of Milano, and in 1937, the president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities. He established committees to aid Jewish refugees from Germany, and later to assist all the Jews in Italy. As a result of the Racial Laws in 1938, and although he was a member of the Partito Nazionale Fascista from 1926, he lost all his positions - in industry, the navy, and the party. Because he was a Jew, he was forced to sell his factory. He then founded a college for 400 Jewish students who were expelled from the University of Milano. With the start of the bombardment of Milano in 1941, he and his family (his wife and four children) moved to their villa on Lake Maggiore. In 1943, a Nazi division arrived at the spot. Jarach and his family managed to escape to the Swiss side of the lake. All the Jews captured by those Nazis were executed and their corpses were dumped in the lake. After a short stay in Switzerland, Jarach returned to Italy, to Rome, where he lived and was active under a false identity until the end of the war. Returning to Milano after the war, he resumed his duties at the Federation of Industry and in the Jewish Community. He tried, by all legal means, to regain his factory, to no avail.
