Description

VERY RARE first Italian edition of the first part of The Lord of the Rings. Published in England in 1954/55 by Allen & Unwin, proposed on two different occasions to Mondadori and rejected, Tolkien's masterpiece was purchased for the first Italian edition by the publishing house Astrolabio, which entrusted the translation to the very young Vicki Alliata. This first volume of the trilogy was published in November 1967, with the planned release of the two subsequent parts in April and June 1968. The publication was a flop: only 400 copies were sold and the rest of the print run was pulped. Obviously the next two parts were not published and only in 1969 did Astrolabio manage to sell the rights to the work to Rusconi: the editorial director Cattabiani, on the advice of Elemire Zolla, who wrote the preface, chose The Lord of the Rings to inaugurate the new narrative series of the publishing house for what is the first complete Italian edition of the work (Rusconi 1970). Alliata's translation was revised by Quirino Principe, but in our volume it retains his initial choices, modeled on Tolkien's own indications to the translators: to set the story in the local language and cultural traditions (to give just one example, Frodo Baggins is translated Frodo Sacconi). The greatest merit of this rare edition, however, remains the map of the Shire which is the original one drawn by Tolkien (in the Rusconi edition there is Quirino Principe's version). Unmissable for Italian Tolkien enthusiasts.
