Óleo sobre lienzo. Escuela francesa del siglo XVII. La escena, ambientada de noche en el jardín de una villa, cuya fachada ornamentada se vislumbra a la derecha y en la que destaca la fuente de la que manan una estatua desnuda, bajo un cielo oscuro oscurecido aún más por densas nubes, muestra a dos figuras que conversan: un anciano vestido modestamente amonesta severamente a un joven sentado, ricamente vestido, que parece hacer el gesto del mea culpa con la mano. La fisonomía y los gestos de las dos figuras, junto con el estilo de su indumentaria, parecen remitir al filósofo Aristóteles, que fue llamado a la corte macedonia para ser tutor del joven Alejandro, el futuro rey más tarde conocido como Alejandro Magno. Según cuenta Plutarco en sus «Vidas paralelas», el joven Alejandro fue un alumno brillante, tanto que también fue iniciado en las doctrinas aristotélicas más profundas y esotéricas, de donde deriva el halo de misterio y profunda interioridad que transpira la obra que aquí se presenta.
